The Parish Church
The
parish church, dedicated to both St. Giorgio and to the Assumption of Mary
into Heaven, stands in the central piazza Ippolito Sangiorgio (Ippolito
Sangiorgio Square). The first building may be dated to around the 14th
century. In the following centuries, numerous architectural changes (the
most considerable of which took place at the beginning of 1600’s) vastly
modified the structure and original appearance. In the first years of the
century they carried out a final renovation, its target was to restore
the Renaissance style.
Reaching
the main entrance of the church, and looking first at the nice Romanesque
bell tower, it is possible to admire the painted half-circumference.
On the latter, is represented a Lady in throne with the Child, together
with St. Pietro and St. Andrea
placed
side by side, which is an opera of the painter Fermo Stella da Caravaggio
dated to the 16th century. Above, inside six circles, some of the Apostles
are represented. Carrying on with the visit, inside the building they may
admire some frescos by Piedmontese school, dated to the 1500’s, such as
the Nativity of Spanzotti's school (the same artistic period as the church
of St. Bernardino in Ivrea). In the right aisle stands an altar dedicated
to the Patron Saint, where the Ancient "Badia" (Abbey) of San
Giorgio met once. Within the church are preserved the relics of the Blessed
Candido Ranzi, considered as miraculous and have been subject of worship
for many centuries.
