The
honor of the chronicles was reached by San Giorgio even for a tragic event.
This was the story of the "Jena" (hyena) of San Giorgio, appellative
given to the Sangiorgese Giorgio Orsolano, guilty of violent crimes against
young women, and who was subsequently hanged. From this tale thousands
of legends were born and, moreover, the good puppet theater play was written
by Guido Ceronetti and published by Einaudi.
It is due to a Sangiorgese, the deputy Matteo Pescatore, that the cultivation of unhealthy rice was suppressed in Canavese. A tablet placed on the front of the Town Hall of San Giorgio mentions those events.
The beginning of the twentieth century signals a new period for San
Giorgio. The choice to renounce the railway reshuffles the village, which
turns from the nearly 5000 inhabitants of the first years of the century
to the present 2300.
This
decision, on one hand, deprived the village of some advantages but on the
other has allowed it to preserve its urban identity and often rescued those
places which, because of the presence of the railway, suffered a confused
development. Now, perhaps, a new leading period may be arriving for San
Giorgio...
