The Carnival and the Monday after Easter Day

The old proverb "as happy as a Sangiorgese" is always present. In San Giorgio, in fact, numerous are the feasts that take place during the year, which are mostly organized by the more of twenty local associations. When the winter is ending, it is Carnival time.

Of allegoric stamp, the Sangiorgese Carnival presents some typically Canavesan peculiarities, such as the beneficent distribution of beans on Sunday and the burning down of the "scarlo" (a big puppet made by paper-pulp), which represents a well-known person of the village. Of strictly local origin are the "giostra del biro" (joust of the turkey) and the "mascre brute" (bad masks) night.

Very active during this celebration, and generally in most of other local events, is the Societa` Filarmonica (Philharmonic Society) "Carlo Botta". The latter, with its more than a hundred year history, is a peculiar and prestigious component in San Giorgio.

The arrival of spring is also a way to make people come out from their houses. For the Sangiorgese people it is a custom to go to the Sanctuary of Misobolo, where among wooded hills they spend the Monday after Easter, and so carry on - even though in a more profane style - the ancient tradition of pilgrimage
